“Sowing the seeds of love, seeds of love, sowing the seeds, the birds and the bees....” If you are anything like me, you’re probably humming along with that anthem of the late 1980s by Tears for Fears. Beyond being a catchy melody, not to mention an apt social and political critique, that song seems to be the background music for our campus ministry at Northern Kentucky University this semester.
God is up to something at NKU. The funny thing is that it seems that the thing God is up to is small, under the radar, and seemingly insignificant. It has the distinct and recognizable feel of a mustard seed. We’re in the seed scattering business at the moment. The soil is plowed, the ground is fertile, and the time is right...but not much is growing (yet). But we follow in the footsteps of a Master Gardener.
We are starting Discipleship Groups of three to five students who meet together weekly to hold each other accountable, pray for each other, study scripture, and serve those in the margins of society. These groups are student-led and reproducible. We host weekly Communion @ NKU, prayer events and worship experiences that allow students to engage with God directly. We are taking a small group of students to Guatemala this May with the University of Louisville Wesley Foundation. We may even be turning over some sod and planting a garden with Asbury UMC. And just like that little mustard seed that Jesus told us about, the Kingdom of God is coming to NKU as it is in heaven.
