AC 2009 Golf Scramble

Bishop’s Golf Scramble to be held Tuesday, June 2, 2009.

After a two-year absence, the Children & Poverty Initiative gladly announces The Bishop’s Golf Scramble IX is scheduled for the A.J. Jolly Golf Course in Alexandria, Kentucky on Tuesday, June 2. This is the first appearance for The Bishop’s Scramble in northern Kentucky, and we are looking forward to the new venue. 

Since the inauguration of the Bishop’s Scramble in 1999, golfers and sponsors have produced over $59,000 for the Children & Poverty Initiative Grants and the summer intern program. During our two-year hiatus because of scheduling troubles, The Galt House made reparative contributions to this fund.

The Children & Poverty Grants (up to $1000 each) have been distributed to churches throughout our Annual Conference assisting the start-up or enhancement of a multitude of ministries. The intern program connects ministers and ministries by providing extra summertime workers for various Conference mission sites while individuals received needed experience and training. This program is directed and co-funded through the Board of Ordained Ministry. 

There will be two shotgun starts to accommodate the expected 150+ golfers. The first at 8:00 a.m., the second at 1:00 p.m., with lunch being served between rounds. A $75 per person ($300 per 4-person team) registration fee includes a commemorative bag tag, all green & cart fees, lunch, cold drinks while on the course, and winner’s prizes. There is a $5 per player “Early Bird” discount for those registering and sending in their money by May 18. 

Besides the friendly competition, contests for longest drive (separate fairways for women and men) and closest-to-the-pin for each start add extra excitement. Most of our golfers in the past have come with their own teams, but individuals are welcome and will be assigned teammates based upon submitted handicap. The Russell Springs UMC has been great supporters of the Children & Poverty Initiative by sending several teams for several years, having their own tournament within the Scramble. 

A substantial amount of the profits are created through our generous sponsors and patrons. There are three levels of sponsorship: Gold $1,000; Silver $500; Bronze $ 250. Patron gifts begin at $50. In appreciation of our sponsors, signs will be posted, and they are granted FREE golf registrations for the Scramble. Gold receive 4 free players; Silver, 2; Bronze, 1. These free registrations can be used by anyone the sponsor designates.

Sponsor deadline for guaranteed sign placement is Monday, May 25. Players are highly urged to have their registration sent to the Conference office by that same date so that we may plan aptly for this most enjoyable and beneficial event.
